Beyond Network Selection: Exploiting Access Network Heterogeneity with Named Data Networking
Today, most mobile devices are equipped with multiple wireless network interfaces, but are constrained to use only one network at the same time. In this paper, we show that using multiple access networks simultaneously can improve user-perceived QoS and costeffectiveness. We present a system architecture that exploits the adaptive forwarding plane of Named Data Networking (CCN/NDN) and implement a system prototype based on the NDN Forwarding Daemon (NFD). More specifically, we propose a set of forwarding strategies that use fine-grained application requirements together with interfaces estimation techniques for delay, bandwidth, and packet loss. Our simulation results show that our approach can improve QoS and/or reduce access costs in many wireless scenarios.
