Boosting the Performance of Electromagnetic Simulations on a PC-Cluster
One of the crucial aspects in the design process of high voltage apparatus is the precise simulation of the electrostatic and/or electromagnetic £eld distribution in three dimensional domains. Since these simulations are rather computing- and communication-intensive, the solvers for both electrostatic and electromagnetic computations need to be parallelized. For this kind of code, clusters of commodity PCs, with or without high–speed interconnection technologies, are becoming increasingly important as target platforms, due to their excellent cost–performance ratio. This paper summarizes the results that were obtained on such a cluster platform installed at ABB Corporate Research using POLOPT, a state-of-the-art parallel simulation environment for both electrostatic and electromagnetic problems.
