Recent dynamics in the business world and the tough environment of globalization put enormous pressure on enterprises to be innovative. As a consequence, management concepts and IT systems must be capable of supporting adaptive organizations with agile processes. These processes automatically react to changes in their environment or provide mechanisms to be adapted. A fuzzy-based approach which enables the management of such agile processes is presented in this paper. 1 Vagueness in business process automation Up to now, only standardized processes were suitable for business process management systems. Today, comprehensive software products able to support thousands of transactions a day such as for example, the processing of customer orders in retail enterprises or the granting of loans in a bank, are available.
