Design Issues and Challenges of 3-D Object Modeling and 2-D Rendering
- The challenges in modeling 3-D objects using facets and surface patches are investigated, and enhancement over the Gouraud's and Phong's interpolative shading is presented. The proposed enhancement provides means for estimating the depth of each pixel that leads to 3-D interpolation and the calculation of range images for active sensors. Additional design issues in using Phong's local reflection model and the ray tracing global reflection model are also discussed and suggested physics-based improvements are presented with illustrative examples. The proposed physics-based modeling requires lab and field measurements, modeling of sensor and atmospheric effects, and validation of simulated signatures against field measurements.
