An internet-based automated virtual reality generator for pain relief
The Internet has impacted our lives in many different ways. In this paper we present an Internet-based automated virtual reality (VR) generator for pain relief of hospitalized burn patients. It has been shown that VR can help reduce the pain of burn patients by luring their consciences away from the pain. The VR generator presented in this paper allows the relatives and friends of a patient from anywhere in the world to upload their photos, greeting sound bytes and videos to a designated web site. When the patient logs onto the site, the VR generator will automatically create a virtual world using VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language). The virtual world contains virtual actors representing the well-wishers, identified by the photos mapped onto those actors. The patient can interact with each actor to make it speak (play the greeting sound bytes) by clicking on the actor.
