MCMSDA: A Multi-Channel Multi-Sector Directional Antenna Wireless LAN
Recently there is an increasing interest in using directional antennas and multi-channel for Ad-hoc wireless networks. Directional antennas provide higher capacity and less multi-path interference than omni-antennas. Concurrent use of multiple non-overlapping channels significantly boosts the network bandwidth. These technologies are also very useful for infrastructure local area networks. In this paper, we present the architecture and the MAC layer design for a Multi-Channel Multi-Sector Directional Antenna Wireless Local Area Network (MCMSDA WLAN). In our design, multiple wireless access points (WAPs) are deployed around a room and operate on several non-overlapping channels. Each WAP has an antenna array with the main lobe covering a 90-degree angle. Each wireless user in the network has a multi-sector directional antenna. The multi-sector antenna uses control circuitry to direct the radiation orientation. MCMSDA WLANs provide many more virtual channels than the non-overlapping ph...
