Optimization of radar scanning strategies using an ensemble relative error criterion

We study the formulation of the problem to retrieve wind ﬁelds from radar data. The considerations here view the radar locations as ﬁxed with retrieved wind ﬁelds as functions of scanning strategies. The scanning strategies are formulated in terms of a scanning model that depends on certain parameters. The objective here is to minimize a functional that is deﬁned in terms of the relative error between retrieved wind velocities and an ensemble of test wind ﬁelds. A numerical study is presented illustrating the theory developed.
