Towards Data-Driven Design of a Peer Collaborative Agent
The research literature investigating the construction of tutorial dialogue and learning companion environments present parallel experiences in attempting to emulate what has been observed to be effective in human-human scenarios. We argue that what is needed as a next step is a careful investigation using controlled experimentation to construct a causal model of how specific features of an agent’s behavior influence an individual student’s behavior and learning. We outline our research agenda and results from a recent study illustrating our methodology.
