Video Coding using 3-D Anisotropic Dual-Tree Wavelet Transform
This paper investigates the use of the anisotropic 3-D dualtree discrete wavelet transform (DDWT) for video coding. The 3-D DDWT is an attractive video representation because it isolates image patterns with different spatial orientations and motion directions and speeds in separate subbands. Our previous codecs using the 3-D isotropic DDWT provides better performance than the 3-D SPIHT codec on the 3-D DWT. In this paper, we explore the use of anisotropic DDWT (ADDWT) for video coding. The ADDWT extends the superiority of the normal DDWT with more directional subbands without adding to the redundancy. The proposed codec applies SPIHT to each of the ADDWT trees. This codec provides significantly better performance than the 3-D SPIHT codec using the standard DWT and the DDWT, both objectively and subjectively. None of these video codecs requires motion compensation.
