Quantitative Analysis of Strategies for Streaming Media Distribution
Streaming media applications are becoming more popular on the late years, as for example, news transmitted live through the web, music, show, and films. Traditional client/server architectures have shown to be inefficient for distributing streaming media services. The total number of users is limited due to the demand of computational resources, which are higher than in traditional web applications. One of the proposals for an efficient distribution is the use of a P2P overlay network. Although there are some works that evaluate this proposal through simulation, there is a lack of quantitative analysis of the requirements for server and network resources (i.e., CPU, server and network bandwidth) in actual P2P systems, compared to traditional client/server systems.
