Symbiotic routing in future data centers
Building distributed applications for data centers is hard. CamCube explores whether replacing the traditional switchbased network with a directly connected topology makes it easier to implement these applications. CamCube targets container sized data centers and uses a 3D torus topology, with each server directly connected to six other servers. It exposes the topology through a coordinate space and a lowlevel CamCube API. As in several other proposals, e.g. DCell and BCube, multi-hop routing in CamCube requires servers to participate in packet forwarding. Traditional data centers, as well as these proposals, have all applications using the same routing protocol. However, due to the flexibility offered by CamCube, most services implement their own routing protocol in order to achieve specific application-level characteristics.
