ted Talks and Poster Abstracts S1, T1 Title: Evolution of the Mammalian Lamin A Gene Author: Susan N. LoCurto and Dorothy E. Pumo Affiliation: Hofstra University, Department of Biology : Lamins are intermediate filament proteins that maintain nuclear envelope integrity. A-type lamins are expressed in differentiated tissues while Btype lamins are expressed in all cells. Numerous human disease states, collectively termed laminopathies, result when lamin A is mutated or lost. Lamins have typical intermediate filament organization with a rod domain flanked by non-helical head and tail domains. For this study, complete lamin A coding sequence for bat, dog, and opossum and partial coding sequence for cat, chimpanzee, cow, elephant, and macaca were assembled using bioinformatic techniques. Lamin A sequences for human and mouse were previously known. Sequences were tested for evidence of adaptive evolution. Overall, the lamin A gene appears highly conserved as predicted based on its role in th...
