Chances and Limits of Progression in Visualization
The amount of data to be represented by visualization systems requires new ideas for data processing and representation. As proposed in this contribution, this might be solved by a progressive data and geometry handling. To show the chances of the feature, possible applications of progression within the different visualization stages are determined and general statements to the respective operations are provided. Thereby, options for the progressive handling of common data and geometry sources are discussed. However, the requirements for a successful application of progression can not be satisfied by all data types and visual representations. This is considered within this contribution by identifying and explaining the most important limits of the approach. If data and visualization allow for progression, the added value is high.
