Therefore, general purpose programmable processors using software to perform various functions become more attractive since programmability can simplify system development and increase flexibility to meet the rapidly changing standards in the highly competitive market. One good example in mobile applications is a software radio where various algorithms, such as channel extraction, up/down conversion, modulation, and demodulation, are performed using software on a general purpose processor instead of using fixed hardware components. However, computational complexities, especially in the areas of telecommunications and multimedia, are still too high for the embedded processor to manage. Therefore, a high performance hardware accelerator to replace various special purpose hardware components on the board and reduce the computational load of the embedded programmable processor will be quite attractive.
