An Architecture for Motion Estimation in the Transform Domain
demanding algorithm of a video encoder. It is known that about 60% ~ 80% of the total computation time is consumed for motion estimation [1]. The second is its high impact on the visual quality of reconstructed images at a given bit rate. More accurate predictions increase the compression ratio and improve PSNR (Peak Signal to Noise Ratio). The third is that it is not specified in the video coding standards. It is open to competition and has much influence on product qualities, such as H/W complexity, power consumption and compression efficiency of a video encoder. In this paper, a novel architecture for transform domain motion estimation is proposed. We derive a recursion equation from the algorithm and wavefront array processors are used to perform motion estimation algorithm adaptively in the transform domain according to the compression ratio.
